I've had my heartshaped parrotfish for about 2 months now, and I noticed (about 1 week after I bought him) that he would find a place in the aquarium and litterally place himself upside down.

Now, I thought it was a swimbladder problem, however whenever he swims around the tank, he doesn't swim in an odd way, nor does he swim upside down, or float to the top due to air in their swimming bladders....

It's just that whenever he retires to his "home" (a little cave near made by slate) he always positions himself upside down... Has anyone experienced this with parrot fish?

I know that parrot fish are known to have diverse behaviours, but... upside down? Hahaha... it's just too weird to be true!

I've had him for over 3 months now, and to this day, he still does the same thing... I would've figured that if it were a bladder infection, he would have died a long time ago by now. But of course, he's still alive and healthy =)

Heartshaped parrots have hteir caudal fins cut out so that the dorsal and anal fins meet i na heart shape. Their are osme natural deformities, but most are manmade. Because of the missing tailfin, the heartshapd parrots tend to go "upside down" when they rest. Its not jsut your fish but most, if not all of them that do this. At least so my research has revealed.

Thanks for the reply =) Wow, that's really weird... I did notice that some heart shaped parrot fish have that section where you can distinctly tell that their tails have been removed, however my heart shapened parrot fish doesn't have that "missing section" as if it looks like a heart...as if it were naturaly like that. I hope that made sense.. hehe

Anyway, thanks again for your help! I'm at ease now knowing that there isn't anything wrong with my heartshaped parrot.. hehe

I would say the old "some are just born like that" story is just so people dont feel bad.I have seen tanks full of them and theres a huge variation in tails, its just how they heal, some look worse than others.Regardless of this because of having their tails removed they tend to have problems swimming and staying upright.

Thanks for the info! Your numerous replies have helped me so much =)
I guess it makes sense about the whole tail healing thing, I guess they took the tail off while my parrotfish was still young. Anyway, I've also observed that whenever he "hovers" he is still upright. It's just whenever he retreats to his "home" is when he positions himself upside down. Hahaha, it's quite funny watching him trying to position himself upside down on purpose =P

Yeh cichlids are quite resilient creatures.I had a short body convict that would spend almost all its time laying on its back in a plant pot as it lost the use of its swim bladder but come feeding time he was out and about fighting with the other fish for pellets then would go back and lay in his pot. This went on for nearly a year.

Heres some info about cutting tails off fish if your interested.
