I recently purchased my first Betta (Almost three days ago, I think) and it's began to act a bit odd. It's began to stay at the bottom of the bowl, not moving, for decent lengths of time. It also appears that he's been eating at his own tail... When feeding, he's snapping at the food, holding for a moment, letting it out, then snapping again. It takes him a few times to actually eat a blood worm. I'm concerned about it, and if it is sick, I'd like to know ASAP. (I sound horrible for saying this, but the pet store I bought it from offered a week guarentee, and I'd like to get another if this one is stricken with some kind of fatal disease, which I hope is not the case.) Thanks in advance!

Edit: Now that I have my room lights off, since I'm about to go to bed, he's become kind of panicy. He's darting around the bowl, kind of wobbling during swim. Now he's settled back to the bottom... Any help would be greatly apprieciated!

fish can be like that while adjusting to a new home. My betta barry was like that but he got bettaer and now my new betta picaso is acting like that as well. I wouldnt get to worried about that.

Alright, thanks a bunch... I was kind of worried for a bit... I didn't want to lose my new friend so soon, you know. Is there anything else you know of that I can do to help him get used to his new home?

i dont think so. i know w/barry it took him 1 week to get used to it, but w/picasso he still isnt used to it and its been a week today.

do you know what the temperature of the water is? If it's in a bowl, i assume there's no heater. When the temperature drops, bettas can seem depressed and listless. Try putting him in a sun during the day for a bit.

If you think he's still adjusting to his new home, you could try putting a cloth over his bowl (dont' cover the surface), that should help him relax a bit.

When changing his water earlier, I placed him in front of the window, which I wasn't really paying attention to, and made a decent mirror. I came back with the water to find him flaring and such at his reflection, then changed it and brought him back into my room... He seems to be a little more active now, and I was hoping that wouldn't agitate him too much. A bit ago it looked like he had the hiccups, which I'm still fairly certain fish can't get, is there anything to say about that?

hiccups? did bubbles come out of it? he might be tryignt o make a bubble nest.
