well ok to start off i have 1 male betta in a ten gal an the ten gal has been this way about 1 year. with some java moss silk plants an a clump of floating plants i found in my grandmums pond.
i added in 2 otos a couple weeks ago.
an thismorning i noticed i had OTO FRY!!! i read up on it an it says they are quite difficult to breed. but i didnt notice was my male betta was puting some of the fry into his bubble nest an taking care of them like i guess he would his own. hes never been bred hes jus a common walmart VT. ive taken out most of the fry an left a few in there an he is taking care of them from what i can tell.
i posted this in the catfish forum an some one suggested i should post it here too. from what i can tell hes doing a good job an has a heart of gold.

leave your comments or cruil words. just remember I BRED OTOs...well they bred them selves :p

The male Betta is taking CARE of them? That's insane! And also, very adorable. I'd say, if you don't notice the betta eating them, leave 'em in there! They could probably do with the extra care!

Awesome, and good luck

**PS** If you decide to give away a few, I've been meaning to get 2 more, as my little guy is all alone and I can't find another ^_^

idk i might give some away to some friends an the pet shop lady that doesnt have an otos but wants some. but first i want to see how the betta does. theres only about 10 from what i can tell that hes taking care of.

hehe :D now i have enough otos to talk all my tanks :D ... im not sure about my betta taking care of them i really wish i had a camera to take pics. I NEED A CAMERA!!! lol

oh ya for you betta breeders out there. is it normal for the male to add some more to the bubble nest after there are fry in it?

is it normal for the male to add some more to the bubble nest after there are fry in it?

errm....yes? But it's not normal for them to care for other fishes young

ya hes quite content with it. he seems really gental. an any time any of the other fish.(one of my albino corys or otos) get by the nest he chases them off. its almost like im breeding bettas only...im not :p

Last time i bred bettas *years ago* i had some danios in the tank previously that must have spawned that spawned.
The male was tending to the nest with his own young and as the young were growing something didnt quite add up as some of the fry were swimming a bit different, and later on as the fry developed there were half a dozen danio fry with the betta brood.
I seperated them off but was quite surprised he had raised them with his own.

Its amazing though that he doesnt have his own spawn.

ya. an hes NEVER even been bred that i know of. i jus cant get over it. i have it posted in the catfish forum an here.

any one know if they babys might starve from being kept in the bubble nest. i dont see any probs but i want to know all i can. but this is a pretty unique case so i doubt there will be any one that really know unless theres some one that breds bettas and otos.

but help is appreciated.

Haha, I've never heard of anything like that before! Too cute!

what can i say. if you raise something with love an respect it passes it on :D
