hi new to all this, am at present seeking a second hand tropical tank complete with heating and filters etc, ive done a small amount of reaserch and understand the eco system and balance of bacteria that is needed.

a quick question, at present we have a small cold water tank on the side with a couple goldfish that has been fine for atleast 6 months, my question is this:

could i use some of the gravel from that in a freshly set up tropical tank to help and boost in the bacteria levels required?

i have a spare foam filter which i could also just place in the tank for the same effect??

is the above logical? or is there a diference between cold and tropical temps and eco systems?

secondly the fish we will use, ideally for a starter and not greatly expensive??

with thanks

I'd say it's ok as I have swaped coldwater and tropical fish around and only taken out the water and heated it for the tropicals. So, it amounts to the tropicals going in with ex tropical gravel and filter and visa versa.

I am not sure about the rest.

is the above logical? or is there a diference between cold and tropical temps?

Was that a typo? There's a difference in coldwater a tropical temps in that one is heated and the other not. -_-

Hope This Helps :)

thankyou

so could i actually use the water and the fish to start the eco system in my tropical tank?????

or would the poor little goldfish die?

HUH?

I thought you were talking about adding some of the gravel from the coldwater tank?! I wouldn't put the coldwater fish in to cycle the tank. I didn't get that was what you were talking about.

yes that is correct that was my plan to add the filter and some gravel, i asked about water and the fish itself to see if it was possible

I don't think there's any point in adding the water but I wouldn't add the fish as they are coldwater and I don't think it's fair to distupt them but that's JMO.
