I asked this in Tropical Chit-Chat (along with some other questions) but no one has responded, so I was hoping someone will respond to this particular question here.

I just bought a 30 gallon tank (36" long x 12" deep x 16" tall). I'm setting it up with sand for substrate. Once it's fully cycled, I know I *definately* want a group of kuhli loaches.

How many could I have in my size tank? I know they're happier in large groups -- how many should I get?

Yes they are, but I cant find any around here. I looked in about 10 fish stores and no luck. The only loaches I can find around here are yoyo's, clowns, and dojo's...

I want a school of Kuhli Loaches bad

Kuhli's have been "out of season" for nearly 2 years now because of illness and IMO, poor handling. So anyone who gets them is lucky. The black ones are a wholly different species from a different area and aren't as hard to get but still not as common.

Oh thanks for pointing that out. I stopped at my LFS and they carry the black kuhli loaches... are they a lot different than "regular" kuhlis? Could I still put a group of 6-8 of them in my 30 gallon?

Black Kuhlis are more active and grow to a smaller size so you can definitely keep the same number or perhaps one or two more than the normal Kuhlis. They require the same basic care and settings. They get along with all other fish that are peaceful. Bssically a more outgoing and different colored Kuhli than the "traditional" ones.

germanshepherdlver: I think he meant the Yoyo would kill the Kuhlis and it's definitely possible.

I think u get me wrong I'm saying that my yoyo loaches would kill them. My yoyo r so agreesive to a point he will attack any fish I put in lol. Typically loaches which what my 20g r made for. Pure loaches tank.

Not to hijack, but can I ask a couple of questions about kuhlis?

My mom got two from my brother over 5 years ago. She has NEVER vacuumed the gravel in her tank, and just adds more water as needed never a change. She only has two pretty decent size goldfish in a 30 gallon so I guess that is why she hasn't had any problems with ammonia, etc. She put the kuhlis in the tank when she got them, and just assumed that they got eaten or died because she never saw them. She called me about two weeks ago saying that "those worm things that I got finally came out". I went down there and she has two kuhlis. Her gravel is SPOTLESS. She said that they stayed in the gravel and "cleaned" it. Do they do that? Do they burrow into gravel and keep it clean?

I'm surprised they're still alive with that kind of treatment. They don't eat waste so something else must be doing that but they do eat leftover scraps of food. They should be getting their own sinking pellets to feed on as well for them to be truly healthy.
