So im sitting here tonight doing a little bit of dream shopping and some planning. Money isn't the stuff we find lying around the home (thats called dust - plenty of that in the nooks n crannies) and i've built my wish list for my marine tank. Its a 96" x 30" x 24" tank and ive went through pricing a sump and so on an so forth until I arrive at my final price.

If I divide the price by a 10 deck of cigs, it will take 8 years to get the money saved. 4 years on a 20 deck - but the 8 years seems more realistic due to the fact I would also like to be out of the flat and into our own home and considering the college the other half is going through 8 years seems like a good scale. It's also plenty of time to convince the other haf she really wants this giant tank in the living room.

So my question to others is: how long have you planned a large (100 gallon or above) tank through and what did it take you get your way? (I reckon i'm going to have to give in when i get this tank and permit a large rattery.)

You are planning too hard DQ. You just set up a nice community tank in say a 29 gallon and take good care of it. Then you start looking for the right deal on a 4 foot tank, with the appropriate permission up front. While you are looking through whatever the local recycle sellers location is called, in the US it is Craigs list, in Canada it would be kijiji, you find that huge tank and point out that it is cheaper than the 4 foot you have both agreed to get. It likely will actually be cheaper. How could either of you pass up such a good deal on a dream tank instead of the smaller one you had been contemplating? It is how I got my 6 foot tank and that is still the only 6 foot that I have 30 years later.

8 yrs?? sod that!!

get on ebay and find a second hand one.. bid on christmas day and you`ll get one for the price off 200 fags ( which costs about 50 quid i think?) 8 yrs.. in 8yrs you may not be here to enjoy it.. live for the moment

loving it!!

Often the strange killer that I get with Ebay is im often 600 miles + away from decent tanks and the cost of van hire + fuel makes it an extra £200.

The lovely setup that I have found has full delivery at £80...

so only search within 25-50 miles.. and at that saving you could be enjoying a fag as you drive home ;)

so wheres the setup is it too far?? you`ll be surprised at what will appear just after xmas honestly.. by new year people will have started killing there fish thru lack of knowledge and selling on the tanks feeling totally defeated... trick is .. dont go round and say " oh maybe you should have done that" tell them, in an email when you get home

You are far too devious for me Shelagh. I can never seem to do that kind of thing to people.

I don't know what you guys have there but we have a site called craigslist but you can search local like and hour or so away I'm looking for a 125 gallon have found some good deals so far.

I also use Craigs list. I have no idea what they use in the UK. In Canada it is a place called kijiji IIRC.
