Hi I'm cycling my new tank, I intend to keep community fish and 1 or 2 pairs of dwarf cichlids, can anyone please tell me which fish are the worst offenders for fin nipping.

Cheers Jeff.

Barbs are worst, but any shoaling fish (as said above) may nip.. in my experience, if kept in groups of 15+, most will almost never nip.

You want to be looking at something like..
* 15-20 5cm shoalers, probably tetras given that you want dwarf cichlids
* 1m 2f Apistos
(* 1m 1f Laetacara dorsigera - if you want two dwarf species, it is best to not mix Apistos)
(* maybe 6 Otos as bottom fish as Corys and plecos will almost definitely eat any spawns)

Hi Kitty Kat Thanks for that list, should I get one species of shoalers or say six of several differant species.

Cheers Jeff.

I always prefer one large group :)

Me too. A lot of people think that lots of different species will look more 'interesting', but in actuality a larger shoal of one species looks far more impressive :)

Now how the hell do I decide which to go for. :book:

Cheers Jeff.

one large group would look amazing although 2 groups of 10 would also be suitable

Thanks Lilfishie, I'm undecided, too many choices. :rolleyes:

That was my first thought, cichlids and Oto's bottom, shoalers middle, but what about the top.

Here are some ideas..
* cardinal tetras
* rummy nose tetras
* glowlight tetras
* black widow tetras
* black neon tetras
and if you don't mind some which are known to be on the fragile side..
* neon tetras
* green neon tetras

I personally prefer to bypass the top most of the time and have a few more mid-water shoalers. If you want something for the top, look for a single dwarf gourami.
