-_- My blue CT has two tiny pin point sized holes in his dorsal fin next to his body. When I originally got him he was missing a piece of his tail. It's now growing back nicely - although it's coming in red - but there's no other sign of anything wrong. He eats great and is lively.

The other CT which I bought at the same time - same store - has dropsy. He was fairly large so I never gave his big stomach a thought until this past week when it just exploded in size. He's eating but the scales are starting to pop up.

I'm beginning to wonder if there might have been something wrong with that shipment of fish originally. My other four are fine.

pin holes isn't something u can be to stressed out about, my females got em and my male vt who juts passed away today had them as well ( thats not y he died ) they arnt a big deal, they heal over time. as for dropsy, its a very serious diease, theres some one else here that has a fish with dropsy, u can go there to find how to treat him.

Hi Nashnutny,

The "pin holes" can be treated with Potassium Permaganate (PP), a very potent disinfectant that should be diluted properly before being used as a bath (i.e. for the fish to swim in it for a short while).

PP comes in the form of purple crystals and can be purchased from pharmacies. It is usually used to treat infected skin conditions (eg. foot rot) in humans. To use it as a bath for your fish, do ensure that it is diluted till the water is very light purple because you just want to kill the organism that's causing the holes in the fins and not to kill the fish.

After treatment, the fish should be returned to a clean tank of water.

MelaFix (by Aquarium Pharmaceuticals) may be used to aid the healing of fins. However, if the damage is too severe, the fins may not look as good as before.
