I had my tank over a month and a half now but still no fish (hence not an emergancy yet), I was going away on holiday so just got the tank and set it up to start cycling when I got back (which I have been for 2 weeks now).  I declorinated the water and added some live plants, unfortunately the plants had hitch hikers :( , first of all snails hatched which have cause me to pull out some of my plants as they seemed to be killing them.  They are not really a worry as I have just been pulling them out as they get big enough and appear, but I also seem to have some worms/leeches on the inside of the glass.  I have taken some pictures using my usb microscope to see if anyone can identify what they are, they must be about half to a mm across and about 3-5mm long, its a 400x mag microscope:

Yes I know the outside of the tank is a little mucky lol, theres also lots of tiny little things moving around too, but there's no chance of getting a pic of them.

I just need some idea of what they are so I can work out what to do, I am halfway through cycling and really dont want to have to start again if it can be avoided.  However I dont want to put any fish in there if there's a chance these are paracites of some kind.

Thanks in advance,

Pele :)

They look a bit like planaria and sure you can get rid of them with a few different treatments. A shrimp keeper I know of uses cat/dog de worming tablets in one form or another to keep them at bay.

Thanks :) , looked them up and they dont seem dangerous to the fish either :D .  Will give the dog worming tablets a try.

They're not dangerous, no, but they can eat baby shrimp.

Here's the instructions I got when I asked my shrimp supplier about them...

They are easy to kill by buying some Panacur, deworming tablets for dogs/cats. http://www.pet-supermarket.co.uk/Products/CN109001/intervet-panacur-22-granules

Just mix 1/5 th teaspoon in about 10ml water, mix and crush till its desolved. Add direct to tank. Any Hydra or Planeria will be dead within 72 hours. If you still find a few, do another dose.

Hope that helps!
