They are just your regular old lamps. They are about 36 wattas each and i have 4 on my 75 gallon tank. Im not really gonna do the "lush" garden, just enough to keep me happy and my fishes. I read that its ok, as long as your not expecting a really lush garden.

My question is, will they still grow on a regular lamp?

For starters, as long as you use regular "plant and aquarium" bulbs, you will do ok. Then you can experiment from there.

Although, with just 36" bulbs, you are just meeting the 2 watts per gallon minimum rule of thumb for plant growth.

Are they ok for a planted tank?

Yes they are.. If in your place (from lamp store etc..) they sell Philips TLD 8 and 9 serie, consider to buy them (like Philips 865. Ra-index 80-89, 6500K and if you want to better Ra-index, buy 9-serie like Philips 960, Ra 90-99, 6000K) Ra-index tells you how good the tube is repeating colours, 100 is best repetition.

Under 4000K normal fluorescent tubes are quite yellowish. I don't like too yellow color and that is the reason why I always buy higher kelvins tubes (5-6500K). Daylight is 4-6500K, 4000K is yellowish other than 6500 is more whitish. Now I have 2xAquastar and 2xPhilips 865 -> Colours look like this. Colours are alitte bit reddish, because those Aquastars falsify colours pretty much.

The tech speak goes way over my head

Nice link someone posted a little while ago about the different colours
