Hello,
Two days ago I started a 42 gallon aquarium. I've got both a mechanical filter, as well as an undergravel filter. The pump that I am using to operate the undergravel filter is VERY NOISY.
I've got the aquarium setup on a towel on a 2 drawer oak file organizer. The pump is sitting directly behind the aquarium on the organizer, at the same level as the bottom of the aquarium.
The mechanical filter is very quite. The only other sound that you can hear are the bubbles coming out of the air feeder tubes from the undergravel filter.

A few of my friends have 36, 50 and 55 gallon aquariums and their pumps are nice and quite.

Can you think of anything that I might be doing wrong that might be causing the pump to be noisy?

How can I quite it down?

Some pumps are just noisy but just in case its vibration i often cut out a piece of foam so that the bottom of the pump fits snuggly into it and that removes the vibration factor. HTH :)

I know what you mean. I tried the styrofoam method, but it didn't work. On one of my tanks I've placed the air pump in a slipper and then wrapped a towel around it to stiffle (sp?) the noise.

depends on the brand of pump but for an aquairum that size you'd be much better off running a powerhead on that UGF than the air stone.
