From as little as 5 feet away, you should not be able to tell whether an external, what I usually call a canister, is even running. I cannot tell from much closer than that on my Marineland C series or my Rena XP series filters. The Fluval x05 series filters are also reputed to be quite quiet so there is something not right about yours. I would start by tilting the filter body this way and that to completely remove whatever air bubble is causing the noise. If the filter goes quiet for a while and the noise comes back, check all of the inlet connections looking for any sign at all of an air leak path. Even the top gasket that is used where the motor head joins the rest of the filter is a location that can introduce air if it leaks at all. Something is causing your filter to be noisy and it is not at all normal for such noises to persist over time. Instead, you will need to play detective and find the inlet side air leak that is causing the filter to become noisy after you once get it quiet.
