Hi,

I have recently brought a brand new 405 external filter. I'm not sure if it's my expectations/sensitive hearing but i find that it's quite noisy.I can hear a definitive hum noise which really bugs me as my tank is in my bedroom. I've goggled this and tried the solutions other people have brought forward has just made the noise a little louder. now i'm just wondering if to be honest it's just me being to over critical of a noise that should be there?

Anyone else have one of these and how noisy are yours?

I suppose you have tried to tilt it forwards and backward to try and remove trapped air?

Is the filter sat directly on the wood of the stand? You could try to muffle the vibrations by placing a foam sheet or similar underneath

Hi Steve,

I've tried tilting, tried placing on a foam pad as well. I've been on to the website i brought the filter from today, and explained to them the noise, sounds like its not how it should be. Going to take the impeller out tonight and turn it on apparently if its not silent then this means there is a problem with the motor. Anyway the shop has offered to replace with a new one or a different filter of the same value. So now wondering if i get the Tetratec External Power Filter Ex1200 instead or even a internal u4.

Get the Tetratec! :D Internals are pants to clean and take up space! :D

Well after spending a couple of nights trying to get the 405 filter to be quieter and being kept awake by the noise its making i have given up. Today i rang Seapets and they are going to send me a Tetractec 1200 out tomorrow and collect the 405 off me plus refund the difference in price. I was really impressed with there customer services. Think i just had bad luck with this but not willing to get the same filter again just in case.

Hoping the Tetratec is the right choice to make.

They are terrible too :(

Joking! I run two, they are ace :) Stick your old media at the bottom and remove the carbon from the 2nd tray down and jobs a good'un !

My mature media is in a internal filter (Fluval plus 2)at the moment i'm running it alongside the fluval 405, plan to do the same when i get the 1200 for a few weeks then run the 1200 on it's own. I will be sending the fluval 405 back with all the filter that came with it. Why remove the carbon from the 2nd tray? and what's good to put in there instead? how often do you change media in these?

Remove the carbon, because you dont need it, keep it for removing meds from the tank should you ever have to treat your fish for anything.

The EX1200 comes with LOADS of media already, you dont have to replace it with anything.

Run them both together for 2 months then you should be able to remove the internal.

Although, i would actually take out the sponges in the internal after this period of time and put them into the external filter, perhaps where the carbon used to be. Just so you can have some mature media you can use should you ever start another tank or want to fire up the old internal filter in another tank for an instant cycle.

Job done.
