Hi Iā€™ve got a couple plants I want to put in my tank however Iā€™ve previously become over run with snails I donā€™t eat. That to happen again. Iā€™ve read that I can rinse in a 19:1 very weak bleach solution but to rinse them to use dechlorinated water which I donā€™t have. So my questions are:

Is dechlorinates the same as distilled water or deionised water?

Can I just rinse throughly in tap water before putting in the tank.

Please help!

It's ok to rinse them in tempered tap water, just make sure you do it thoroughly. Wasting distilled or deionised water for this, wont do much of a difference.

Dechorinated water is preferred because it will contain products that actively deactivate chlorine and chloramine.

You don't have any aquarium tap water conditioner ? They also neutralize heavy metals.

Oh yes I do have some tap water conditioner didnā€™t think of that šŸ¤¦šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø

So just soak in weak bleach solution and then use the tap water conditioned water to rinse throughly?
Would you know how long to soak in the bleach solution?

in a 19:1 solution, sensitive plants 30 second, more hardy, up to 2 minutes, rub them and swirl them in the solution constantly.

Then rinse them the same way in dechlorinated water for at least 5 minutes.

This method is pretty hard on the plants. So you can anticipate some damages.

There's safer methods with Alum or Hydrogen peroxide.
