this is kind of a simple alternative to building a hood, and still keeping an open top tank.

i took a sheet of plastic (48"x5") and cut some plastic tabs out of the same material.

then i cut some slits (1mm x 10mm) horizontally in the plastic about 1/4" from the top edge, spaced 2" apart.

slide the plastic into the front track of the coralife light, then insert the tabs through the plastic and into either track edge along the light.

no more glare from seeing the bulbs! and it only cost me $4

Anyway I could convince you to take a pic? Sounds like a great idea, but I'm having trouble wrapping my head around the details :)

here are the pics .. on the left is the tank with the shade, and on the right, without. i've finished the second one now too

sorry, i still do not understand. even the pic. I think it might be a great idea, can u explain it more detail?

with the coralife light there's a track that runs along the front and rear..normally its for the flip up mounting legs, and some LED lights that mount on the same track.

the track is 10mm in the recess, and 9mm on the front.. that leaves a bit of a channel.. it holds the mounting legs on the rear

the plastic tabs i cut are 11mm x the width of the slit in the plastic

i insert the tab through the slit in the plastic, into the bottom edge of the track, then bend the tap and it fits into the top edge of the track.

the plastic tabs bend a bit, the natural tendency is to try to straighten out flat, so there's a bit of a curve which is enough to hold the plastic tight against the light.

a few of these and it doesnt move
