I picked up a 36x12x12 at the dump, trouble is it has no centre brace and I'm unsure whether it should or not. I can't see any evidence of there ever being one however. It's floating base, plastic rims.

I dont think I've ever seen one without. Except the tiny plastic tanks.

If it is only 12 inches high I doubt it needs one. The 36 inch tanks that are tall (38 or 45 gallons) really need the center brace but there is not going to be as much pressure with it being so shallow. I think thats a 23 gallon tank you have there.

Great find. Have you checked to see if it needs to be resealed yet? I actually have a stand that would fit it, but no tank of that size. :)

How thick it the glass? If it is thick enough it might not need one. If you are worried I doubt it would cost much to get a small piece of glass cut just to go accross the middle.

Nope, doesn't look like it needs resealing, just looks like someone emptied it and stuck it in a garage for a while. Is it easy to cut glass youself? I've got a few bits lying around that would suit.

weight of water, being the thing to look at. 12" of 6mm glass will need no brace. however if you do fit one, be very careful that you devide, exactly in two with the brace, making the tank, in effect two 18x12x12 tanks, if the split is not right you may get trouble. though as i say the would be no need on your tank unless it was over 15" tall!

Read the description on the tank, it's .4" thick tempered safety glass....much stronger than regular glass. Probably doesn't need it.
Err yes, that was the point. its the price i noticed. i did in fact say it was off topic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! or did you miss that bit!

I had a 30 gallon that was 36"x12"x16" that had no center brace, it was designed without one. It held water fine for 6 months until my oscar outgrew it and I gave it away.
