Okay so I went to the walmart that carries live fish, since my mom and I were on that side of the town earlier this morning. I was excited to see all the bettas because I had $5.00 and a spare tank to keep one in. But when I looked at where they keep the bettas normally, they didn't have any. And just last week they had more than 20 cups stacked on top of each other and crammed all together on a shelf. I was going to ask someone what happened to them all, but like always, there was no one in the fish department.

So I did not come home with a new boy. I was thinking about getting another female because they do carry some awesome females at walmart, well the batch I saw last week was beautiful. They had some really nice blue metallic colors.

So my mom lent me $5.00 and I bought a 1 gallon aquaview plus with the underground filter and light and everything. It is a cute little tank and is perfect for a male or female betta. And I have a 1.5 gallon bowl that is empty. Oh yea, and an empty 10 gallon, but no room for it. I suppose I will use it as another hospital tank.

Anyways, my question is...what do you think happened to them all and should I get a male or a female betta for my 1 gallon aquaview?

Those that didn't get sold died. They don't feed their fish you know? Anyway. I don't care to get fish from Walmart. They are almost always sickly and die very quickly after being bought. At least that's with my Walmarts.

Well I've bought three von rio tetras and a male betta from walmart and they are all very healthy now. My walmart that carries fish isn't THAT bad. A lot of dead fish, but the alive ones seem in okay condition. They do feed their bettas there because when I got my male betta his water was way polluted with orange flakes. Looked like goldfish food. :/

Well they don't feed them here. That's why you have to buy them within the week because at the end they are all dead of starvation or disease. But by the time that happens they usually get their next shipment in so nobody really cares.

My sister used to work at Walmart. She even asked about the fish. The manager said it was cost effitiant to feed them. So they go unfed and diseased in our 'wonderful' little town.

they feed the bettas at both of my walmarts. But thats wierd that they would be gone so soon....even at my huge walmart, it takes at least a couple weeks for them to get sold (or die off :/ )

maybe nobody bought them cause they were sick, and they decided to stop selling them cause it wasnt making a profit anymore. its almost impossible for all of them to die in a few days

Well it was more like a week and a half, but still...I doubt they were all bought and were all dead. My boy I got there is really healthy and doesn't even have any signs of finrot.

Personally, I wouldn't even support Walmart. Give your money to a fish store that deserves it.

the only thing that thing that bites is for us struggling college students, we can't afford not to shop at Walmart. I do try and support my lfs whenever I can, but I'm still looking for a job so money is scarce and sometimes Walmart is all I can afford.

Hey guys, There is a thread in another section that talks about someone who works at WalMart (and is a forum member) wanting a list of stores that don't do well by their fish. I think she is going to a meeting soon and might be mentioning the store #s. Anyway, there is a link below if anyone wants to add to her list.

Um... Wallmart bettas cost about the same as bettas from Petsmart or Petco or Pet Supplies Plus, most other chains really. Not to say they're always better, but price difference probably isn't an issue. I'm learning that fish are not a good hobby if you don't have money, because they end up costing a *lot.*

As for a male or female in the little tank, go for a girl. A full grown boy's finnage would not give him enough room in a 1 gallon, but girls have small fins. She'd probably make out OK in there.

Yeah, learned all this after my friend had given me fish :/ But you get so attatched to them! :) Anyway, I didn't mean fish cost less at Wally-world, I meant supplies. Okay, I'll stop posting off topic. :p

I buy them from Walmart, only because if I don't save them...really, who will. I haven't met very many ppl interested in Bettas out here. At the Petstore I work at, I am the only one that keeps them. Everyone else likes community tanks, and let's face it. Bettas can be paired up with other fish in a large tank...but usually they end up getting their fins eaten off that way.

Raech - I have both Six and Lucky in those little 1G aquaviews.
They seem happy enough, but now I am looking into getting a divided tank for them - maybe an eclipse 3g? or maybe a 5G? I can't leave them in the 1G forever, but they work out okay for a while...
but, if you're going to have to move them into something bigger later, a little girly in that tank would be so fun. They have so much personality and are fun.

And - the shelves at WM around here are sometimes empty too. They just sold them all probably. It happens a lot around here, especially if there's some special occasion - there wasn't a betta to be found in town the week of valentine's day. I don't know if people are getting them now for mother's day gifts or what, but I would bet that they all got sold. :)

Hmm weird. I hope they have some in soon. My LPS carries bettas but they are always red and blue combos. Walmart has some pretty good selection for being walmart. I am thinking about planting the tank really nicely and keeping like 4 ghost shrimp in there.
