I have 55 gal tank that I do frequent water changes on. It's been up and running about 2 weeks after using the previous filter media from my smaller tank. The past few days the nitrite levels have been high. I've been using the API master test kit. Ammonia has stayed at 0, Nitrites anywhere between .5 and 2.0, Nitrates at 5.0...... I seriously cannot figure out why! I know Ammonia gets turned into Nitrite which is then turned into Nitrate but if there is no ammonia, how can I get nitrites??? I've been doing 40% or more water changes as well as vacuuming every other day to keep it low. None of my real plants have any dead or dying leaves and all of my fish seem healthy/happy.... any idea of what it could be? Oh and I tested my tap water, besides having high pH, everything reads at zero!
