Hi There again all,

I've had my new tank installed now for about a month. (190l) All seems OK, I do a 30% water change every week without foul. Add the bacteria stuff that ive bought from the LFS.

My amonia levels seem fine but i cant seem to get the nitrite levels to go down, no matter what i do.

I have 5 danios in the tank which were added last week ( was six but one died :( )
and two fancy goldfish (Which seem fine)

Has anyone got any ideas how I could try and get the nitrite levels down to a normal level ???

Sorry to be a pain but I was sure I was doing everything correctly.....

Thanks !!!!

CJ

Sounds like your tank is still cycling. As your ammonia's okay, the bacteria which convert ammonia to nitrite have obviously appeared, but you've yet to build up those which convert nitrite to nitrate.

If you wait a bit everything should settle down just fine :) I wouldn't add any more fish till the nitrites have gone down to 0 though. Good luck!

Thanks for the reply, I'll hold tight and continue with the routine im doing until the 8 weeks is up !!!!

:D

Mutation,

I completely feel your pain! We were battling high nitrite levels for about 15+ days - over 5.0. Everyone said, "it'll go down, it'll go down - one day you'll test and it will suddenly be zero, just like that."

So we did daily 20% water changes and had a stocked tank.

Well just yesterday, it completely dropped to zero! We were so excited to finally be done!

So just continue doing water changes (assumming you're stocked) and one day very soon, it will totally drop.

I don't recommend adding any chemicals to make it drop - just let nature take it's course. Your fish should be fine - we had zero fatalitites through the whole thing.

Good luck!

Many thanks Bear

Like i said at present im doing 30% a week

I might change this to 25% twice a week

thats great help though, really puts my mind at ease .. ( i just am scared stiff my fish are going all die !!!)

During this time, you should probably do daily water changes, just do dilute the water as much as possible since nitrites are in fact toxic.

Just a thought...

wILL TRY TO DO AS MANY AS POSS

Thanks Bear
