iv just tested my tank and the nitrite is between 2 and 5 is that ok or is it dangerous for my fish ?

This is nitrite, not nitrate? Just checking, it's easy to get one letter wrong.

Secondly, is it 2 to 5 mg/l or something else? I suppose it can't be mg/l, for if there really was 2mg/l nitrite in the tank, your fish would be dead or dying by now.

If it's nitrite, then it's bad to have any at all in the water, because it's poisonous to fish. The nitrite level should be at 0 at all times. If it's not, there could be something wrong with the beneficial bacteria. Is the tank cycled?

yeh my tank is cycled but iv just added a new filter. is there ay solution i can buy which will get rid of the nitrite

I had a nitrite spike a while back in a tank I was medicating. Daily water changes, and leaving the water level about an inch low to increase aeration for a week did the trick.

If that is nitritre then your level is dangerously high! It doesn't sound as though your tank is cycled at all :( How many fish do you have and how old is the tank and what size? You need to get a nitrazorb and some gravel for an established tank so you can seed some bacteria in. Do many small water changes and just wait untill the level comes down. A level of 5 is pretty fatal for many fish types or it leaves them permanently damaged :/

my test says 5 parts per million. hope my fish dont die iv got 1 plec and 8 guppys

iv just added a co2 system aswell. would that have anything to do with my nitrite rising ?
