Nitrate Reduction

I know this pops up a lot, usually followed by "water changes" as the generic answer of choice, which tends to annoy peeps who already do loads of water changes and live in areas where tap-water is anything between 20-50 mg/l of nitrate.....

I know there may also be questions about what fish i keep, but can we just stick to nitrate reduction rather than a general free for all about the bigger picture

However, excluding "external" measures like RO, Nitragon etc.....

Is there anything out there (filter wise, media wise etc) that has seperated itself from the others in effectiveness or peeps feel so good about from their own nitrate readings that they want to blow its trumpet?

For example API Nitrazorb?

Juwel Nitrate Sponge? which did nothing for my nitrates

Tetra Easy Balance? i think the science of how it works is quite disputable from memory?

What (if anything) is out there that i can use in my tank/filter to try and drop nitrates a bit?

I used hagen nitrate remover, it reduced by 25ppm/ 25 mg/l

It can be recharged up to 3 times using aquatic salt mixed in with the tub they provide you with, (salt about £2)

Live plants. Heavily planted tank owners have to add nitrates to their tanks.

Interestingly, federal law in the US limits nitrates to 10mg/l at the tap. The EU figure was revised down to 50mg/l, (from 100mg/l), in 1985 - probably time for re-visiting that particular piece of legislation.

I use Seachem matrix but not for nitrate removal. I find it's a good biological media for bacteria colonization. If it does hae an effect on nitrate, that's fine. The nitrate does run low in my tanks but they are all heavily planted so most of the ammonia is probably being used by the plants rather than converted.

JBL nitrex is good and it works

i used it for a bit but was having to regen it every week with the amount of fish i have

i also have a shuran nitrate reactor in the garage which was also good but it brought the PH down slow as it was running on sulpha beads
you can also run a nitrate reactor with siporex then feed the reactor with alchol

dont worrie about the nitrates mine are never lower than 100 ppm and my rays bred in that so it must be ok for fish as long as you do 1 water change per week to freshen up the water you will be fine
