Doe's anyone out there have any experiences with these pouches. They say that it removes ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. I was wondering how effective they are. I'd like to see how they are for removing nitrate.

Thanks

I had thought about putting ammonia chips into my setup with the theory that ammo chips=less ammonia=less nitrite=less nitrate (I was having a prob with high nitrates for a long time). I was informed, and this makes sense as weel, that I would deplete the number of bacteria in the tank, and if for some reason I hadn't recharged the ammonia chips, or they "were full" , I risk ammonia poisoning for my fish.

If your pouches were to be "full" to the absorbing capacity, the same thing could theoretically happen.

IMO, in that case, the risks outweighed the benefits (or laziness) and I would just double up on my water changes until the right levels were established.

Pouches/Chips=less live bacteria (not enough food to support their #)=risk of poisoning.

I guess it's kind of the same thing with carbon inserts. If you leave them in too long they start the leech out toxins. I think I might take a pass on it. My nitrate levels are usually around 10-20 ppm, which is acceptable anyways. I'll keep doing my water changes.

Thanks.

The fact the carbon leeches toxins is a debatable one (not meant for this thread....or me  ), but I agree with passing on it. Glad to know that I wasn't the only person o have considered being a little lazy for awhile.

The carbon thing is debatable. I don't use it anymore. I like to get opinions when I go to lfs and most of them will tell you to use carbon. I guess they just want to sell the stuff. It's funny how theres so many different opinions on everything when it comes to fishkeeping. It can be a little frustrating at times. :sly:

I don't know if this will help but - we have suffered from new tank syndrome with inordinately high levels of nitrites - we were doing water changes every day and sometimes twice a day. WE bought something called Bactozym made by TetraAqua - they look like pills.

You drop one either in the water or put in the filter and they gradually melt. They have not cured the problem like magic but we are now getting a lower Nitrite reading and a higher nitrate reading which suggests that they have "kick started" the cycling process. WE are still sticking to regular water changes but I think these tablets have moved the process on a bit.

Not a magic cure but I believe they have helped.

Jane :D
