Have fancied some convicts for a while (waiting on Nik for that one! :D )
and was wondering if anyone had kept them with nicaraguensis, read an article in PFK that said it was possible, but wondering what tank size would be minimum for a pair of each, and whether anyone has success (or bad  ) stories about keeping these two species together???

This could be a problem when the convicts mate. They will definately harrass the nics. I would say a tank of at least 30 gal and plenty of hiding spots. Now if you get say, 2 female convicts you will probably be ok.

I think 30 gallons sounds a little small for 2 Nic's and 2 convicts, as the Nic's tend to get quite large, and need lot's of room. As for keeping Nic's and convicts together, I've never tried. Nic's are quite docile compared to other SA and CA's.

I find that Nic's tend to be much happier living in a family group of 1 male and a few females. They tend to claim a large territory for their family, as each female will build a nesting pit (around 10-12" apart), and the male and females together will build a few more pits or safe zones where the eggs will be relocated to and guarded over by all the females together. I have 1 male and 3 females in a 72 gallon (4 foot).

Can you ever keep other fish in with Convicts when they are mating? SOmething that will stand up to them but not harass them??

Tank size, 3 ftat the moment but am thinking of a 4ft for these fish :)

You are pretty limited in that size tank. Might get away with a salvini if its the only fish in there with the convicts.

they sound like interesting fish.......anyone in the uk got one of these???
