I know everyone loves their skimmers, and from what I read here and elsewhere most are pretty capable and most are rated at higher than their real capability. Initially I had 2 quotes for tanks that included the TMC V2 600 but research would seem to suggest I can get a lot more bang for my buck.
The skimmer will be sitting in the or next to the sump (probably in as there is only about 5" clearance either side of sump in cabinet), internally the cabinet has 800mm clearance so no height issues.

I want to keep it under £130 and I need it to be as quiet as possible, with it being my first skimmer purchase I would really like it to be fairly simple too, as I think I will have enough to cope with without confusing skimmer set ups.

Someone has suggested a second hand Deltec APF600, most of those seem nearer £200, there's a few MCE600s for around £100 second hand, which I know are hang ons but can obviously sit in/next to the sump.
Alternatively I could go for the Turboflotor Blue 1000 for £112 new.

So what would you do and anything else you would recommend?
Thanks for all the equipment recommends so far your help is greatly appreciated.

I bought the 1000 blue as the tmc are noisier and have a tendancy for the cups to overflow.

If I had the money I would have got the deltec without a doubt and will be getting rid of the blue as soon as I can to be honest.

In all honesty I wouldnt recommend either of them, and I have owned them both, a tmc 400 not the 6 or 800 ;)

From what I've read I would recommend the deltec, nothing but good reviews. I will be getting a second hand mce600 myself and a great thing about them is the built in media trays to run carbon or rowaphos or possibly both.

Yeah was looking at that Grayscale as a good little extra feature, seem to be lots around. There are some good second hand deals around but want one newer than 3 yrs to get the quieter version and most I have seen are older than that, although some have had the dampening fitted.

You can get a Bubble Magus NAC6 or a Marine Sources CS 120 (both cone) for that sort of money - OK, so the BM comes direct from HK, but a huge saving on UK prices (and genuine).
The BM is very quiet, and the pump sits underneath the skimmer, so will fit in much smaller spaces than some of the other models. I've also read lots of great reports on the MS skimmer too.

I would not go for the AM blue 1000.

I use a bubble magus nac6a and would recommend it. Heard a lot of bad things about the tmc range.

Thanks guys, but deed is done now, picked up a second hand Deltec MCE600 for only £75. Only 18 months old and only used for 6 months, think I have ended up with a reasonable amount of bang for my buck.

He had it up for £90 but he got stung on pay pal so he wanted cash on collection. I had to take my wife to Kings hospital and it was a few miles away, offered him £75 and he took it.

Met him in a dark alley behind a pub, he was wearing a trench coat with a neatly crafted lining offering a display of frags "wanna buy a frag"
