can anyone tell me if you can buy newts?my partner and i have a small pond with fish and frogs and thought it would be nice to have some newts.i know some are endangered species and are protected, but are there any more common types that are not?any help would be appreciated.

all native UK species of newts are protected by law
and they can not be brought or sold, in fact to do so could involve a hefty jail sentance.

There are some species you can buy that can be kept outside in ponds, temperate European species like Crested Newts (not the UK Crested Newts) Alpine Newts, Boscs Newts, also some Salamanders, Fire Salamanders can be kept outside. All those are better kept indoors though, as some are expensive, and may go lost if kept in an outdoors pond. Theres a forum that covers Amphibians that can be kept outdoors, here http://outdoorvivaria.proboards18.com/index.cgi

Theres always the chance of your pond naturally attracting native species of Newts though.

I would have thought it was illegal to keep non-native species of amphibians outdoors in ponds, but obviously not  .
Is it because it is too cold for them to breed?
Or are they just brought indoors during the winter?

I dont personally keep any species outdoors, so Im not sure? it may be worth asking on that site I linked to, as it explains a lot about keeping Amphibians outdoors on that site, I dont think they are brought inside in winter, as it mentions on there that they hibernate outside, I would also think breeding would be possible with many species.

If your pond is a suitable habitat for newts, they should move in on their own accord like the frogs, but its probably not for the best as with fish in there, the fish may eat the newts and any babys they have which wouldn't be good for any native newt species. What sorts of fish do you have? Koi and goldfish will eat small frogs and tadpoles, large adult frogs are usually fine with such fish, but they are not ideal pond mates.
