The riverine Telmatochromis sp. 'Lufubu' from the Lake Tanganyika basin in Zambia has been formally described by Adrian Indermaur, Frederic D.B. Schedel, and Fabrizia Ronco in the Journal of Fish Biology (DOI: 10.1111/jfb.16042). This species was first discovered by Adrian Indermaur in 2012 in the lower section of the Lufubu River, about 32 km from its mouth near the village of Chomba. A limited number of specimens were subsequently imported to Europe for aquarium keeping.
The species has been named T. salzburgeri by the authors in honor of their friend, colleague, and mentor, Professor Dr. Walter Salzburger. It is distinguished from all other members of the genus Telmatochromis by a prominent orange stripe along the base of the dorsal fin, which extends into the fin itself and across the dorsum.
