hello all

after looking through various threads i have decided i would much rather try my hand at setting up a small marine tank than a tropical

this would be my first time keeping fish so i have a few questions ...

what would be the smallest tank i could get? (links would be helpful)

what sort of price am i looking at to get everything needed? (tank , rock , salt etc)

how hard is it to look after and keep everything healthy?

any help would be great

thanks danny

Hi and welcome to the salty side ;)

Have a look through the nano reef section of the forum. Look at the build logs. These are pretty much the smallest tanks you can have. There are smaller ones called pico tanks, but they are ridiculously small, so just forget about them for now.

For the moment, have a look through the Nano section and then have a read up of the FAQ section on how to start a marine tank. Familiarize yourself with the basics, then if you have more specific questions after that, ask away.

Prices will vary depending on size and quality of the items you buy and where you buy them. eBay is usually a good place for live rock. People sell it off a lot cheaper there than you can buy it "new" from the LFS or online stores. eBay is also a good place for buying complete setups too. But, before you spend anything, you really need to get yourself well versed in marine fishkeeping!!

Things to keep in mind are what type of tank you want to keep. Whether its FO (Fish Only), FOWLR (Fish Only With Live Rock) <--- probably the best place to start IMO, or a reef tank which is fish, corals, inverts, the whole shebang.

If you haven't ever kept fish of any kind before, you need to educate yourself about the nitrogen cycle and the importance of water chemistry. If you were to go for a full reef setup, then it becomes a bit more involved, as more water parameters come into play.

Another thing to decide is what type of fish you are planning on keeping too. Some are for species only tanks or are uncompatible with corals and other tank inhabitants.

Once you have the basics, its really not that difficult to keep marine fish at all. For now, just read, read, read and soak up as much info as you can.

Cheers,

AK

:hi: to the salty side Danny :good:

Grab a notepad and start researching, it's half the fun woo hoo

Trod had never kept marine before so you might want to take a gander at our journey to the salty side in the nano section. There are many tank start-ups in there, just immerse yourself ( excuse pun) and enjoy. Note down the basics and everything you like - then come back and ask us loads of questions.

Start yourself a journel. either in the nano section or the journel question - that way you have everything in one place and after you have your tank all set-up you can look back and see how far you have come - also helps other newbies

:hi:

erm...can't add much more than what has been said already. Reading the various nano journals would be a very good start though, that's where I got most of my info. :)
