hi, im just feeling my way around these forums but thought id jump straight in.

i have had some great advice from my brother who also keeps fish, and have managed to set up a reasonable tank. it is cycled and now home to 4 zebra danios, 1 leopard danio, 1 golden danio, 2 mollies and 2 guppies.

im not bothered too much about adding more fish just yet, but could i if i wanted to?
im now much more interested in making the tank look good, and be a great environment for my fish!

any advice/comments welcome ............

Personally i think the stocking is quite light and you could probably add more fish - to give you a balanced tank I would reccomend a shoal of 6 Pygmy corys. These guys only grow to about 2 inches and live to shoal in groups of at least 6 - they will stick to the bottom of your tank and give your tank interest at all levels.

However corys would only work if you have sand or fine gravel as a substrate. Bigger gravel will damage the fish.

In terms of environment the best thing I did for the fish in my tank was get live plants. There nowhere near as expensive/complicated as you'd think. They make the tank look lovely and your fish will love you for them.

Thanks for the reply

i was hoping this would be the answer, as i was thinking the same and wanted to get more fish just didnt want to dive straight in there and get too many.....
Also im definately going to get more live plants in there.
i do have fine gravel and so will look into the cory's ........ any other suggestions for tankmates to my existing fish?

thanks a lot

I woul stick to corys for the moment, Given you need to give the filter time to catch up with new fish. After that you could look into other fish.

If you are good with water changes then yes, you have room for more. I know that people throw around stocking rules left right and centre, and love to shout 'overstocked!', but you basically have to go by trial and error and see what works for you!

How about a shoal of cories for the bottom, 6 would be good - look at panda cories they are fab! I would add three one week and three the next. Then when they are settled, how about a dwarf gourami? They are great centrepiece fish for a tropical tank community like yours, as you already have shoalers in the danios and livebearers. Alternatively if you have soft water, rams are a good choice for an interesting, peaceful fish, although the gourami will spend more time in the top half of the tank so would be more visible.

Then I would round it off with some cherry shrimp and a few nice looking snails :)

Great thanks for the feedback guys.
Ill get looking into some more fish probably after xmas now.
Once i feel im getting somewhere i will get some pics uploaded onto here!
Have a good xmas

thought id come back onto this post and share my progress.

i still have 4 of the original 6 Danios, 2 mollies and 1of2 guppies.......
I spent a bit of time trying to get the tank looking well and added a few plants to provide cover and bogwood, along with a few Spongebob Squarepants figures (2 yr old Son loves these)
by way of fish i added 5 peppered Cory a while back and now that these bedded in ive added 7 neon tetra to finish my community.

here is a picture of what i have, (the floating breeder contains 2 baby mollies that i managed to save)

ive really caught the bug since i started and my tank now has a happy community!

That stand doesn't look like it runs along the length of the tank? I hate to tell you this but if your tank isn't supported all the way along, it isn't going to be long before you come back to a wet floor and dead fish. Get a stand asap that supports the whole length and width of the tank. 100 litres of water is very heavy, you need to support more than just the ends or you're begging for the tank to crack.

yes i know, its a temporary home as i had to move the tank.
the cabinet isnt under it all the way no, but i have taken temp. measures to support it. mustve taken the pic before id put it back under. thanks for pointer though, very eagle eyed! ;-)

Phew! Glad to hear it and I'm sorry if I jumped to wrong conclusions but I have seen it go badly wrong on these very forums before!

I'm really not sure 'best' is the right word

All I will add to what's been said is that you should look to get shoals of fish rather than just one or two. (unless you're getting fish that like to be kept alone of course!)

I've been getting into Rainbow fish recently. They look really nice and are peaceful fish. You can get nice coloured ones too. A shoal of them would look good.
