Looking overe some Catfish forums I see L numbers used alot - I believe this is a catalogging system. I wonder if all catfish have an L number - for instance does my Panda Cory have an L number? or is it for the more obscure species

Thanks

Rita

nope - your cory will have a C number :)

have a look on www.planetcatfish.com

If you user the Cat-e-log and sort by common name, it will list the C numbers and the L (and LDA) numbers ;)

"L" is short for Loricariidae, the family name for species of "plecos"

"C" would be short for Callichthyidae, the family name of "cory cats"

I didn't think all plecs had L numbers. I thought it was just for 'unidentified' species.... Ah well, you learn something new every day. Like don't poke a lit candle with a short piece of string.... :X

That's correct. Species that had been officialy described before the L/LDA system was introduced were never asigned an L-number, and species that had a number but have since been named no longer use the L-number ... except in the hobby.
