I've recently become quite enthralled with the world of aquaria, and as such I bought myself a tank.
It's about 40 gallons, but it's quite tall (I think the dimensions are about 32" long/12" wide/24" tall. I also have a top fin 60 filter/light ballast/couple of heaters/stick on thermometer. I did have the good sense to really check stuff out here (and a couple of other boards too), and as such have done nothing further. Before I start to set up the environment and cycle this tank, I'd like to have an idea of the direction I'm headed with it.
From everything I've been reading on this board (and God, there's a LOT to read on these boards), it looks like African Cichlids would be a sensible place for me to start (general heartiness of fish + the water where I live is naturally quite hard). Depending where I read though, it seems like my tank may be completely inappropriate for these, as it is tall rather than long. Aesthetically, I really like the look of the Africans, and I understand their behaviour can be quite interesting to observe. Can anybody give me a little advice as to what the most appropriate thing for me to do with this tank is? I'd obviously like to get a good mix of colour and action.....anyone?

Welcome aboard. :hi: Your tank sounds just fine for a 'plain old' community tank. You can get some really great colors in there if you can find the species. Rainbowfish are beautiful. Check out Boesemani, turqoise and red Irian.

Angels are a type of cichlid and they come in white, marbled black and red. There really are colorful fish out there in just a community tank.

Cichlids need long tanks in general for compatibility issues and being territorial. Try a post in the Cichlid section and see what you get.

Welcome again. SH

Hey well most likely this is gonna just be the start for u as fare as tanks so i would start with an easy community tank set up with hearty fish so u can get used to caring for them! I have african cichlids and well some are strong fish most ARE very sensittive and will die if not well taken care of and nicer cichlids do cost alot more than regular fish.. so you want to start with somthing cheap cause your fish might die in the cycling of your tank or get sick. you do want a long tank with alot of rocks for cichlids as they need these things as well as other stuff to live healthy. I went through 5 different size tanks when i first started and now have a 135 gallon cichlid tank and 36 gallon salt tank.. you can get VERY colorful community fish and different shapes and sizes you just have to shop different fish stores and take your time...... so hope this helps alittle good luck!! :good:

Thanks man,
I hear you on the "just the start for tanks" thing. I haven't even got water in this one yet and there are at least three project tanks I have in my mind already.
I'll keep you posted what this gets into...
