Hi I'm totally new to tropical fish but I'm not stupid either.

I'm thinking of setting up a tank with some interesting and bright tropical fish(maybe about 10??), but I don't have a clue what fish are compatible (but I would like a clown if possible), and I also don't know what size tank I'd need.

I need loads of help:

1. What colourful, interesting and compatible fish can I get (hopefully some that won't die on me).

2. What size tank do I need (or rather what size do the fish need) I'm not actually sure how much a gallon is (maybe I am stupid  ) so dimensions might be better.

3. Do the fish have any special requirements.

4. What equipment do I need for the tank (i.e. heater) and whats the best manufacturer.

Also does anyone have a link to a gallery of tropical fish, with photos (obviously  )

I would be really greatful if someone could help me.

Thanks in advance.

2. The tank size you what depends on you, most beginner get a small 10gal to test themselves on first before getting anything bigger. A gallon is about four litres.

1. The fish you can keep in 10gal varies because it is a small tank. Dwarf Gourami, Betta, Guppy, Corydoras, Otocinclus, Tetra (most of them) and a few more.

3. All fish have special requiremments, it's just that some have less than others. It all depends on the fish you want.

4. The equipment you need for a Tropical Freshwater Tank is a heater and a filter. You can buy others things as well like an air stone ect, but a heater and filter are needed.

Are you going to make this a planted aquarium with real plants?
This is a good site on aquarium fishes lots of pictures and comments too. http://www.aquahobby.com/e_gallery.php

Hope this helped ^__^

I say if you're gonna do it, do it right and skim right over the 10 gallon tanks to a 55 or a 75, especally if you plan on doing a marine tank (clowns, right?) There's a ton to learn about keeping marine tanks and we have several experienced members who can help you in the marine forum (or they'll come by in here).

Cichlids are also very colorful and they're freshwater (there's always something new to learn about them too!) Have fun making decisions :hey: :kana: And welcome to the forum!
