You all seem very knowledgable and helpfull so I thought I'd ask for some help.
I used to keep a tropical community tank many years ago and have just deecided the time is right to start again with the hobby.

Initially i have budget approval for around £500 from her who must be obeyed to get me started so the question is where do I start. is £500 enough?

I'd like to keep Discus so would like to build my setup with this in mind.

I have space for a 4ft tank and dont need a stand for this but will need to buy everything else. Can use internal or external filtration

Could you guuys give me a list of the bits and bobs I need to get me going again please and if you can recommend "reliable" places to buy from even better.

Thanks in Advance

Deano

I know squat about Discus - but as you have kept fish before, you do have some knowledge of fiskeeping - may that be general and non-Discus related. If Discus is what you want, I suggest speaking to Discus gurus and discuss what you can offer in terms of setup, budget and how you plan to deal with their requirements (in terms of water quality etc.) - but I say GO for it !

A 4 ft tank would be perfect for discus external filter would be alot better so you can use peat to give a black water affect this helps keep the discus in good health also please make note that a R/O units are reccomended to keep discus in good health and 10 to 15% water changes should be done every 3 to 5 days to keep the nirates down due to high amounts of food they intake blood worm would be a good choice as discus are well known for stopping eatting for no given reason and they bullie each other, Tank size of 130 Ltrs upwards is good the more discus you keep the easier because they dont bullie as much for food that way, PH should be around 6 which when using R/O or deionized water is a simple job because you buffer ur PH by hand , Keep a test kit for NH3/4 NO2 NO3 and PH is recommended as well as keeping PO4 levels low is also a good idea.

If your in the northwest you can come into our shop and ask for chris im the manager and will explain to you how to keep ur discus in good health for small amounts of money.

Also use melefix to keep them happy ;)

hope ive helped you
