Greetings fishy people. I'm new here and just figured I'd say hi.

Been fighting a green algae problem in a 33 gallon tank for awhile now and today was the last straw. All it took was looking at greenish water but a few days after a major water change one time to many. Snap. Lost it. Few hours later I'm setting up this shiny new UV 25 watt sterilizer. Not a cheap alternative but I didn't set up the aquarium early last year to enjoy the lovely ambiance of a green night light.

And no, it wasn't cheap. UV, water pump, filter, and misc fittings and hose ran me a few bucks over 3 bills. But if this works it'll be worth it. Apparently you can get them cheaper but I'm one of those impulse buyers, and getting stuff on Vancouver Island, Canada isn't easy. Selection is lacking to say the least and I don't like waiting for stuff in the mail. LFS must love me :p

Anyway, we'll see how long this puppy takes to straighten out this algae. I've turned down the flow out of the pump to give passing green stuff a serious nuking. Apparently these aren't a common toy for indoor aquaria so I suppose I can be a UV guinea pig to anyone considering getting one.

Later...

Let us know how quickly it resolves your water problem!

I bought a UV sterilizer to avoid any problems that may require medication (ie. ich), because I have a tank full of inverts!

One of my friends in England has an olympic sized UV unit in the line between his two largish garden ponds. Works well, his water is always very clear.

when my pond water was like pea soup i added a UV unit and saw results with in 2 days, I couldn't say how long it took though as we went on holdai for 2 weeks, but it was crystal when we got back.

We have a green pond.............but I am waiting for a suitably economic UV filter to appear on Ebay............

.......watching two at the moment.... :D

Okay, its official. UV Sterilizers are worth their weight in gold. The water in my tank after 3 days is now clearer than some bottled water I've seen. It's pristine! Crystal! Absolutely amazing and worth every last penny and them some. The fact that they nuke disease causing organisms like Ich is just icing :) My place is super bright in the common area where the tank belongs hense the summer algae problem. The plants grow like weeds, but so did (past tense) the green water. This puppy is invaluable, and I can now recommend it to anyone with the disposable income to get one for their setup. I thought I could get clear water before... but now.. all's I can say is woooow.

5 stars

for 3 bills you could have set up an automatic water change system, but I guess UV will do. Careful with the bulbs, I once saw the price for a 15W for like $70!!

Owwch! Expensive to replace. Ah well... as far as I'm concerned, I just want a healthy and happy aquarium as the ambiance they provide is priceless (to me at least). That, and I'm preparing to add a 70+ gallon tank and bridge it to this one, and would prefer to have this UV anyway to help minimize the chance of having both tanks wiped out by some nasty fish killing bug.

MTS strikes hard :p
