Good eve all! Just joined the forum and I already see a few familiar names from the goldfish forum I haunt. I joined up today as I've just started up a new tank and ended up stocking it as follows:

3 - 1/2" jellybean parrots
2 - zebra danios
1 - leopard danio (this one got slipped in on accident)

The tank is a 20 gallon with a penguin which is loaded with bioballs and foam/floss --all of which is well seeded with biobugs. I also stripped out some biobugs from my main tank's spare filter to boost the cycle in the 20. I understand that eventually they'll need a larger tank, but for now they seem very pleased, are not fighting over territory and have many plants to hide behind and two flowerpots to hide in.

Here's a picture I took before putting the flowerpots for them:

The blue one is Fussy, the large yellow one is Guido and the orangey-yellow one is Tang.

The only other tank inhabitant at this time is a canaliculata snail who happily cleans up anything the parrots do not eat.

nice tank you got there, you are aware that definetely the blue parrot and possibly the others are dyed?
that also give you the good news that they probably won't reach there usual ( 8"+ ) size, and should stay quiet small. have you looked them up atall? theres alot of information on parrot cichlids if you google them :)

Shockingly enough I'm one of those well-informed folks. They might be hybrids and dwarfed, but even the freaks of the world need a home. Yes, I know they're dyed, I also know that due to being hybrids they will most likely be stunted, that they have deformed spines, that they cannot close their mouths and may have swim bladder issues due to the compacted structure of their body.

Needless to say, I'm not a novice. :) I do not directly condone the dye process, but yes, I will admit that by purchasing them I am indirectly promoting it. I love them anyway.

PS: As they get larger, they will be tank-shuffled to something bigger.

its not stunted because it is a hybrid
i think hybrids are fine, and there is nothing wrong with them unless it my mean they live a sad life
it maybe stunt just because the reason it is dyed
it orange ones look natural and thats the way they should be even better it they can get really red like mine and all natural besides the color enhancing fish food  (i really recommend buying Hai Feng)
nothing really much to say but wish your parrots to live a long and happy life :good:

Thanks Jason. I actually feed Hikari, which is my preference for my goldfish as well. I've considered Hai Feng, but for now, I'll work through the Hikari I already have. :)

Sorry Kubora, but I've had a rash of straight-out attacks regarding my fish, so needless to say I'm a little on edge. I'm part of a goldfish forum and wanted to show folks my knew fish, but that just resulted in a huge debate on the evils of my purchase. Ah well, you can't make everyone happy.

The blue one would be the only dyed one... As for tank size... 55g is really the minimum for 2 bps... If you keep them in the 20g they most likely wont live more then about a year.

I've stunted parrot cichlids, and they do not take well to it. I originally had about 10-12 in a 55g tank.. now about a year later I have 1 left, and it still has health problems from being stunted.

Eventually they will probably kill and eat the danios too...

Sorry to be a butt-head.. just speaking from experience.

You're not being a butthead. ;) Yes, I know they'll need a larger tank eventually and thankfully I have one in the wings, but right now they're in the 20 until the larger tank gets here and is cycled. The danios were placed in the tank with the understanding that they may become food, but they're intended to be a distraction to keep the BP's from attacking each other. So far it hasn't been an issue as they're all fairly docile and they haven't even bothered the danios... yet.
