Hey guys,

I used to keep a large freshwater oddball tank a while back, but had to sell it due to having a baby :( :)

Now me and my gf moved into a new place i have an old PFk cube kicking about.

Its 12x12x12 Inches.

My missus loves saltwater fish so we wondered if there is anything we could possibly get into it ?

It doesn't have a very good filter though.

Any help or info appreciated

Hi mate. Sorry to break the news but that tank is only big enough for maybe a pico reef setup. Maybe a zoanthid garden and an invertebrate (cleaner shrimp etc). But in terms of fish I think your going to be very limited.

In terms of filtration, the live rock is your filter and you would also need phosphate remover. Don't think you would need a skimmer tho as the bioload would be minimal.
Then also need to think about lighting T5 min.

If you want to go salty then min tank size for small fish ideally would be 20-25 gallon.
There are plenty of 2nd hand tanks going around with the right equipment needed for a marine setup goin for peanuts so might be worth checking out eBay.

Hope this helps.

If you do decide to take the plunge then we would be happy to help out with advice etc.

Hmmm...ok so about 6.2 UK gallons or 7.5 US gallons. Not a lot of volume there! Definitely approaching pico territory, which is really not a good starting point if you haven't kept a marine tank before.

Not really an issue for marine tanks. If it were me with a tank that size, I'd probably hook it up to be air-driven or just with a very small pump. Live rock is the filter for the marine world, so you'd mainly be interested in something to move water and perhaps a place to stash a small amount of chemical media.

Similar to what was said above: small hermits, a couple snails, small shrimp, corals. As far as fish, there are a handful of really small goby species that can do alright in a tank that size (I kept a Gobiodon okinawae in a 5gal in the past) but it's not really a great thing to aim for as far as a first tank since smaller tanks are much harder to keep stable and most itty bitty fish are not the hardiest. If your interest is FISH rather than inverts, you will really want to be looking for bigger things tank-wise.

If you do stick with the small tank though, I should also add that LEDs are another lighting option that can work great on tanks in that size range.
