Hi,

I currently have a custom made 3 foot aquarium which houses an ehiem 2026 cannister filter, coral gravel and some river cobbles. I have about 20 kilo of ocean rock which was in a previous malawi tank. Its been sat the in the garage for about 4 months. I have lake malawi cihlids in it at minute and would like to try marines now. I also have a hydor korlia 2 powerhead.

Ive been offered the following items and wanted opinions on whether they would be suitable for a beginner in marines.

V2 400 Skimmer
2 x toadstools marine corals
candy cane trumpet coral
brown star zoanthid polyps marine coral
20 kilo marine live rock
cleaner shrimp marine
2 x black and white clown fish marine
hydro external heater
pink long polyp mushroom leather coral frag

I think I would need the skimmer, internal heater and live rock. Is there anything I will require to get things going? Also whats the process to start the conversion.

Thanks in advance

Hi,

:hi: to the salty side

Can you tell us how many litres the tank holds, we will then be able to help you better :good:

cleaner shrimp marine
2 x black and white clown fish marine
hydro external heater

All of these are suitable for a beginner, but, we need to know how much water you have before we can give you guidance on the skimmer, heater, rock

I think I would need the skimmer, internal heater and live rock. Is there anything I will require to get things going? Also whats the process to start the conversion.

Refractometer, to measeure SG (specific gravity)
salt
What lighting does the tank have?
test kits
sand, aragonite (don't buy the 'live' sand in a packet)

Thanks in advance

you are welcome :good:

Hi,

Its a 130 litre tank (36x15x12) and has a 30inch marine white tube.

I guess it would be good to know what would defintaely required from the list of things.

Check the "how much??" thread in chit chat mate...but don't let it scare you off,lol...
Worth adding more light there as well ..an actinic or marine blue and even another marine white if you want to add corals.....

The items seffie listed above will get you up and started

Rough idea how much the following are worth please. I dont want to be overpaying for them!

V2 400 Skimmer
20 kilo marine live rock
300 watt hydro external heater
2 stage RO Unit with media
100 litres of Water from a mature tank
Sand from a mature tank
1 tub of Salt
25 gallon bucket
Hydo Koralia 2 Power head
large piece of marine live rock n mushrooms
piece of marine live rock n mushrooms

V2 400 Skimmer £40-50 ish 2nd hand at the most
20 kilo marine live rock £5 per kilo is usally the going rate for 2nd hand rock
300 watt hydro external heater No idea
2 stage RO Unit with media Not much, ideally you want more Stages with a DI aswel. Then you will get lower TDS which is beter for your reef
100 litres of Water from a mature tank - Nowt The bacteria doesnt live in the water, it lives in the rocks. All you inherit here is someones used up elements and nitrates imo
Sand from a mature tank - not much, depends on weight. Could also cause you problems
1 tub of Salt - what brand and how heavy?
25 gallon bucket - £5er tops. You mean 25L though right?
Hydo Koralia 2 Power head - £15 ish 2nd hand
large piece of marine live rock n mushrooms - Dpends on weight of rock and what muchies are on it.
piece of marine live rock n mushrooms - As above

Hi,

Thanks for the response.

A friends of mine is getting rid of his marine stuff hence all the questions. He has the curent setup up and running and I wanted to transport everything from his tank to mine. I have a bare tank at the moment. Am better off buying some new sand and RO salted water from say an LFS or can I used the salt and water from his tank? Ive got an external eheim filter. What media would I need in this for the marine setup. I have some Seachem Matrix left over. Will that do with some bio balls and some filter wool?

Regards
