Hi all,

Been keeping FW fish for about a year now and decided its time to try a marine tank. Its my birthday on tuesday (wee 21st!!) so my mum and dad decided to suprise me with a brand new tank! It is an Aqua one AR-850. It is almost ready for marines, just need to mod the hood a little for the skimmer but i think i know what i have to do. I aint to sure about the lighting tho, the guy said the lighting is ok and wont be a problem, The guy specialises in SW fish so i think i can trust him... he seems sound. There are two white lights that are mega bright and a slightly smaller purplish light in the middle.

I need to buy a few more things
Seaclone Protein Skimmer
RO unit
LR
Substrate
The thing that tells you the SG..?
SW testkits

Here are some pics of the new tank and bits and bobs (Pics off my fone so a little rough. Cant find my camera)

This is the same kind of tank i was looking to get at some stage, was just having a bit of a rough time figuring out how to get a skimmer in it without using a sump. i think in the end i decided id have to find a skimmer that had a small inlet/outlet or something that can squeeze between the two parts of the hood, dunno if its the same with this model but the one i was looking at the hood was in two pieces, lighting section and filter sectiona nd they shifted apart about an inch if you "persuaded" them to. i thought about cutting it but there was 0 room that wasnt used by lights or filters.

The word you are looking for is refractometer. Tanks looks nice. When you mod it up, make sure you take out any bioballs, ceramics and sponges to help reduce nitrate load. SH :hi:

Hi Kev

Where about in Scotland you from

I have seen a couple of those tanks set up and they are look cracking

About 25g if I remember rightly

Del :good:

Personally I would stay away from Seaclone's there aint much cope

Thanks for that pointer steelhealr, didnt know about that :) and yeah refractometer lol. Chac, im from peterhead, just beside aberdeen. This is the 50G aqua one, i have seen the 29g before and this is more or less the same but longer. Ill look into different types of skimmers.

BeerShark, this is the same tank with the split inbetween lol. this is how the skimmer is going to fit:

You are only going to see about an inch of the top of the skimmer but the tank will be about 5 inchs away from the wall. This is the easiest way the guy and me could see and it only requires alittle bit of cutting. The tank wont be up any time soon, off on holiday for 2weeks and when i get back i need to sell my 4ft tank, but i cant wait :D

You any decent LFS in Peterhead

Holburn Tropicals in Aberdeen have just re-introduced there marine section and IMO is looking to be a great conscientious bunch of people, with some great looking range of LPS, costs me a fortune everytime I go in

I can pm you my opinion on the rest of the LFS in Aberdeen as I wouldnt like to comment online :grr:

Of course there is UDA in Cuper but that is a 120 round trip for me and would be what an extra 80 miles (round trip) for you, but it is a cracking shop & they do a good deal on Live Rock :good:

Yeah, holburn is a great shop and the people in there are ace. Got the tank from A1. gimmi a pm with what you think of the rest. Dont bother coming to peterhead if your interested in fish lol. We have a club next to the police station which sells marines but its a bit of a hole and mega expencive. £25 for a clown... always wanted to go to UDA and would be willing to make the trip. My brother stays in fife so its something to think about. Mite pop in on the way home next time im up that way. Any idea how much LR im going to looking at for this tank? Its about 35in in length, 18 wide and 25 high. Coming out at about 40~50G's

Kev

P.S COME ON PETERHEED!!! Peterhead 2 Partick Thistle 1. Wee 1st div here we come lol

Clueless..do I get points if I tell you play the pipes over here? Anyway, from looking at your pix (good too), looks like those two compartments are filled with ? sponge/filter? Would use this for filter media, eg, ChemiPure and a phosphate binder. I don't know the tank so I don't know if there is a cracking issue. SH

This tank is the BIG brother of the nano i've just setup.

The powerhead sprays water over the wet/dry system in the back. the filtration is polywool sacks with carbon in the middle with ceramics under it.

Once you remove that lot you have a load of room to play with ;)

emm how do you guys mean? What should i put in there once thats removed?

Kev

P.s :( Peterhead 3 Partick Thistle 3, beat on pens Peterhead 2 Partick Thistle 4 :(

You could run Antiphos, nitrate stones (hmm), small rubble rock (Live) in those compartements
:good:
