hi there,

i am currently doing some research on dwarf puffers with a view to setting up a small species tank (maybe!!). i have read that they can be kept in relatively small tanks but do produce a lot of waste. could i keep one in a 20l dennerle nano tank? if so, would the filter provided be strong enough?? should i just keep one or more? should i put anything else in with it or keep it exclusively for the puffer? as i say i have only just started looking into this and know nothing about them yet so all advice is greatly appreciated.

thanks in advance.

well it won't let me post the link the site. google dwarf puffers. there should be a website dedicated to just them.

Hi, have you had a read of this......

http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?/topic/136616-dwarf-puffers-what-all-potential-owners-should-know/

One would be fine it that size tank, I'm not familiar with the filtration on it but a lot of mess can be reduced by drop feeding, I use a syringe to make sure the fish is eating what I out in. For one DP this can be as little as 3 bloodworms in one feed. That way there is no extra waste on the floor of the tank. These fish are extremely easy to train to feed this way.

Ps I keep mine with Khulie loaches but that is in a decidedly bigger tank than you have going :good:

I personally wouldnt go for DP's as there quite vunarable to internal parisites especialy if sold too young. The red tail red eyed puffer is a nice puffer and is not too aggresive with other tank mates.

I have 2 in my community tank and the only aggresion they show is toward each other occasionally. I just wish id have gone for these ones in the first palce insted insted of wasting my money.

Most Puffers can suffer from IP's [I routinely worm all of my Puffers] and I think you will find that the OP's tank is too small for a red tail red eyed puffer.

hi everyone,

thanks for the help and advice. i found the dwarf puffers site through google and have read the link you left for me...both very helpful. thanks again. it would seem there is still a lot of research for me to do and i am currently in the process of setting up a 90l freshwater but i will definitely be looking into dwarf puffers further. once i have this current tank set up, i will probably be back here for even more advice!!

thanks again everyone for your help.

ps - i believe the supplied filter filters 150l/h. would this be enough for a 20l tank with 1 puffer??

Hi, that should be ok, especially if you do the drop feeding thing! It's actually quite sweet to watch them come up for their food!

Hey Laura, Iam also new to puffers and currently own 2 Figure 8 puffers. Heres a site that helped me alot in researching about puffer. Feel free to go through the entire database to look at the other freshwater and Brackish puffers. Hoped I helped in any way.
