Hi, I have never kept corys before and am thinking of getting 3-4 for my tank, i currently have a Butterfly Plec in it. I don't want eggs or fry...so what do you think is the best thing to do? Get all males/females? I don't know how to tell them apart. and i doubt i would be able to because they're pretty small at the lfs. How likely are they to lay eggs? :/

Hi,

If they did lay eggs you would have to remove all the other fish or remove the eggs to hatch them as all the fish in the tank would eat them, and would most likely eat newly hatched fry too. I have loads of corys and they've only spawned a couple of times in the last 5 years. the other fish ate the eggs both times.

Emma :)

To breed cories there are some easy triggers that have to happen, these triggers however, will not happen if you keep the water at a constant level, if you do a massive water change with colder water (10 F colder) then they will spawn (after lowering the water level and pH(supposing your pH is over 7)

Also, the corys and other fish will probably eat the eggs anyway...

Edit-I guess Emma beat me to the post!

Thanks for the replies. I saw them at my lfs and i knew i have to pick some up, really active fish. Also, if they do lay eggs...sounds like my Buttefly's gonna have a nice protein snack *evil laph* But then again, if they eat them themselves too, thats all good too. :hey:
