I have had bettas in the past in community tanks and they seemed to do ok at best. Usually after a few months they succumb to fungus. I have raised fish for years but Bettas have been my short fall, I dont want to buy anymore until I understand them better , because I dont want to waste such a great creature.
I have had them in a community tank before as i have said, but they dont live longer than a few months. My water is usually ph 7.0 - 7.4 and usually have fish listed in my sig. I have usually a calm area of the tank where water is still and not fast moving. My 55 gallon used to be a still tank but i have a few extra bubblke wands now to circulate and my guppies/ platys love it.
I am wanting to set up a 5.5 gallon and put a beta in it with some pygmy corys. would this be ok? and what should the water paramaters be when doing this array?

Your water might be the problem. It seems like it could be a little too cold. My betta's are thriving right now in water temp's no lower than 78 degrees. Anywhere from 78-80 degrees should be warm enough.

I have had the same problem with bettas in the past. The first one i got died and i found out later that it was because of the temperature!

Good luck!
