Rummynose tetras, are one of the best tetra species imo. With the tank you have right now, it is sadly a bit too small for them. They require a tank length of at least 3ft which @Naughts has said above. If you can get a 20 gallon long (if you can find one that is at least 3ft) you should be ok to move the rummys into that so they have more swimming room. If you up that count of rummynoses to 8 in the 20 long, you could maybe add 8 pygmy corys or 5 panda corys. This is all in mind provided you are able to find a 20 long.

You need a bigger tank before you add more. As I mentioned in a post just above. If you add more fish, they will just be like the ones in there already (hiding in the corner and not showing very bright colouration).

I have assumed you have soft water as you are in the north of England. Do you know your water hardness in numbers? You may find a water quality report on your water suppliers website.

I do agree about the bigger tank...but as an aside...I recently purchased 8 rummys to add to my school in a 40B tank, and QT'd them in a 5.5G tank for 2 weeks...the first 2 days, they hovered in a corner...the next 12 days, they were colored up nicely, and were swimming all over that little tank...just moved them this past weekend

That is very good then. They must love that 40B.

@Jules3101 when did you add the rummynoses? If you only added them a week or so ago, you should see more activity than just them sat in the corner. If you added them 2-3 days ago it is normal for most fish to hide for a bit so they can adjust to their surroundings. Have the rummynose been eating?

NEVER add fish or anything else to an aquarium if you have just lost a fish. Wait at least a month and when everyone is happy and healthy and there have been no diseases, deaths or health issues for a month, then you can add some more fish.

You lost 2 platies and the rummynose are acting weird. That tells me there is something not right. You need to let everything settle down and when the remaining fish are ok, then get some more.

Put a picture on the back of the tank to make the fish feel more secure.

Add some floating plants like Water Sprite to provide shade and make the fish feel more comfortable.

Monitor the water quality, do regular water changes and gravel cleaning, feed them, monitor them and see how they go. If more fish die or they act unusual, get some pictures and video of them and put it on here. Do a partial water change.

According to Yorkshire Water, a random Sheffield address (a Spar shop) gives the hardness as just under 4 dH/70 ppm. Though Yorkshire Water says the postcodes for Spars on the south side of Sheffield are not in their area.
