It bothers me that the trend seems to be brighter is better, I feel that we should be thinking about lower light intensity but for a longer time.

Before I changed over to my Nicrew lighting, I had the standard non-dimmable lighting.

So I bought some of this and superglued it loosely onto the hood over the light bar (making sure there was enough room to remove the bar for replacement purposes). I cut the film longer then the light bar by an inch or two so that the brightness didn't glare at each end.

It is a really cheap and easy way to make a bright light, a cloudy day light without losing the lighting effect completely

There are loads of shade and intensity choices but the greys are probably the best for the right effect

There should be a theatrical supplies company in NZ or you can use eBay or Amazon who also have stockists available....if you want to give the film a try intead of spending alot of money replacing the light unit

Depending on the light and hood setup you can either form a sleeve that fits over the light or you can tent it over the light and attach to the hood.

Being theatrical film, it can also handle heat and humidity without any issues to the fish by way of toxins should it fall off.

I discovered the use of theatrical film by reading up about its uses and there were quite a few people who had used it successfully to dim their aquarium lighting cheaply and effectively.

How long have you had the fish for?

How often do you do water changes and how much do you change?
How often do you gravel clean the tank?
How often do you clean the filter and how do you clean it?

Can you post some more pictures of the fish? Try to get in a bit closer so they are bigger o the image.

Don't run the lights for 3 days a week. Just have them on for 8-12 hours a day. If you have concerns about too much light, put some floating plants like Water Sprite (Ceratopteris thalictroides/ cornuta) in the tank. It will shade the tank and make them feel more comfortable but will still allow some light through so you can see them.

I have had fish for approx 1 week or more clean tank 1x every 1-2 weeks
Change 30 litres of 70 litre tank
Try to Clean gravel every w/c in areas where there are no leaves or wood not much free space anymore
Clean filter 1x 1-2 monthly

I had an interesting time attaching the light gel to the hood. I used 0.95c super glue and a couple bits of tape. I'm hoping the fish like it. I think it makes a difference

The male in the most recent pictures seems a bit skinny but that could be lack of food at the suppliers or shop.

Have you got pictures of the one that died?
