Ok so I found a 55 gal. for sale and it is a good deal :D ...this is going to be the new tank for my bichir and some angles and some other stuff later... Now the Q's How long will it take to cycle something that size...should i put myfeeders in there to help the process along... I want to put 1-2" stones as the substrate but using the gravel from wy established tanks will that help ....(ive read some other posts but am a bit confused) Thanks in advance

congrats on the new tank.......should take about 3-4 weeks to cycle fully

u can use some gravel from an established tank to help the bacteria start and maybe cut a corner from ur filter sponge and put that in the filter for the new tank to start a colony off

ppl say cyclin with fish doesnt make it happen faster but i did it with my tank and all my fish survived....dont forget to treat ur water tho to get rid of chlorines......maybe if u used some water from an existing tank too....that could help shorten the cycle time

u say u want stones as ur substrate???......well thinkin technically here....the surface area will be smaller than that of gravel....so less bacteria to eat all the nastyness that ur fish dont want.......what bout if u had some gravel underneath ur stones so u get full colony effect???.....worth a go in my opinion

good luck anyway

Tek :fish:

so what if i used all the h2o from the tank and the substrate and added like 10 gallons of water and slowly increased over the next week...also u think i shold put gravel down then put the stones on top so the bichir wont eat anymore pieces and choke again???

but the garvel down i did
i got the bags of gravel and a bag of stones but the gravel down and stones on top
i also made a cave my silconing 3 stones (rocks) together my plec  it home sweet home

teknikz-

by having a larger tank, does that increase the cycling time or does size make a difference?
