hi all

My new 75G tank is now up and running and so far just has 5 platys

yesterday i moved my clown loaches in too, they were difficult to catch and when i put them i added some stress coat

well got up this morning and they've got white spot.

I've read the article here on ICH but don;t know what to use or when i should use it

can anyone help

thanks

hattie (9 1/2 TODAY  )

Any anti-parasite medication that has malachite green as the active ingredient will cure your fish of ich. You must follow the directions on the bottle and use the full course to kill the parasites in all it's stages of life.

Additionally I'd raise the temp to 82f

(Reasons;Heat speeds of metabolic processes. Ich reproduces faster, has less time to find a host, and is likely to die before it does so.
Higher metabolism in fish add a slight boost to their immune systems so they can fight off the parasite a little easier.) and turn off the lights during treatment.
(Reasons; Free swimming Ich is attracted to light. The parasite swims up toward the source of light where it expects to find a host. Lack of lighting makes location of host more difficult for the ich parasite.
Failure to find a host within 24 hours causes the ich cyst to die without reproducing. )

BTW once a fish is cured of ich it becomes a carrier of the diseas and may pass this on to new tankmates in the future.

Sorry don't want to kidnap your post littlehattie but I must ask wolf this, his answer would be helpful to you in the future aswell (so it's not a complete kidnap  )

Wow, I didn't know that, very interesting. So what would you do in the future if you wanted to add more fish to the tank, the carriers I presume would infect the new fish. Would adding stress coat be enough or what????

Unfortunately littlehattie, Clown loaches are notorious for getting Ich (especially after being re-homed).
The info posted by Wolf will give you an insight into what it is and what's going on, all I would add is be careful with the doseage of medications as Clown loaches are scaleless fish and therefore need to be treated for Ich diferently. I never got Ich with my Clowns so i'm not the best person to ask how to treat them but i'm sure someone will help.

I have not had this problem so no experiance yet.

I would be very dillangent with housekeeping (as always)
and I'd add some form of stress reducing element to the tank, not sure on brand,
also when adding new fish I always keep the lights off untill the next day.
