Hi all, i recently took my misses on a shopping trip for coral frags and she saw a solid oak fish tank stand and tank, the tank is nearly 100lts bigger than my current setup. since she is becoming increasingly interested in my tank and she loves this new one, what is the procedure for moving it over when the time comes to buy it? please help, just want some info at the moment. daz

its easy peasy as long as the old tank is not standingin the same place you want the new tank?

However, even if it is, its still pretty easy, you just need lots of containers.

I moved my 26 gallon contents into my five footer in a very short space of time - Heated and salted water in new tank - put the corals in a box container, moved the rock over, put the new sand in, left it a few hours to clear - stuck the corals and fish in and left for a few days to settle.

If you have got to move the first tank before filling the second - just buy some box containers from tesco or the like, stick your corals, fish, rock in the boxes with heat and flow

Not if you're putting the tank in a different place. Remember depending on the type of sump, you'll have to plumb and will want to be sure you don't have leaks before you move everything in. Home made or plug n play sump?

If it's plug in play, you shouldn't have many places for leaks. Use the containers, like Seffie said with the heater to heat rock and fish when you place them in there. I'd also have a small power head to keep the water from getting stagnant. Save as much saltwater as you can since you'll be needing a lot more to fill with it's just like a water change already. I don't reuse old sand either. I buy new. I've read a lot of posts on a few forums about old sand possibly causing a nitrate spike from it getting stirred up so I don't take the chance. I'd rather limit my possibilities of having to battle nuisance algae :)

The current plan thats floating around is to move the old tank a few feet away (has been done when we needed a house rewire) then bring the new tank in and half fill with ro and salt then move things directly over when its all settled, I'm not saying there are not going to be teething problems, but how's that for a basic plan.
If i took out the crushed coral base and washed it well would'nt that be enough to be safe

Cheers daz

this is what i need to do soon too.

i have to move my 3ft reef over to my new 5x2x2, and also move my other 40x24x15 tank into the new one too.
even then i wont have enough water to fill new tank, so ill need to mix up lots of new water first.
is it safe to just mix up water, leave for 24hrs with flow and then add it to new tank. once thats done can i simply get it to to temp and then add all my fish and corals and LR etc?
do i not need to leave new tank for a while?

Pearson,

As far as mixing salt, that time is fine. Mixing for 12hrs is plenty enough too. I would heat it up to temp while mixing. You don't need to leave newly mixed saltwater for a long length of time.
