Hi All,

I have recently bought a jewel rio 180 tank, i have been told by a friend to use a under gravel filter as well as a normal filter that has come with it, some people say it will be fine some say it is just an over kill and theres no need, i've also been told that it could affect my plants as when cleaning it will disturb them and they wont grow so much. Can anyone just give me some advice on what would be best for my situation.

Thanks

Don't know the in's and out's but I just got a Juwel Vision 180 and opted for NO under gravel filter - have heard there not 2 clever!

...from fellow fish keepers and the lfs.

No biggie if u don't have one.

If you are just having a selection of small community fish the juwel filter will be fine. If you really want extra filteration for keeping bigger messier fish i would go for an extra external filter, undergravel filters aren't too good for plants and not many people tend to use them these days.

Undergravel Filters are not the best, especially if you are looking to keep plants in your tank.

The Jewel filter will be 'ok' for the tank, if you really want extra filtration I recommend going for an external fluval of some sort or one of the internal powerfilters by fluval, a 3+ should do it. :)

EDIT - Emma posted pretty much what I said a minute before me >.<

not to "blow my own trumpet" but my sig pic is my rio 180 been up and running for 18 months or so.

standard juwel filter, no extra filtration at all so it obviously works.

undergravel filters are a big no-no for planted tanks.
