New Tank Problems

I have recently set up a new two foot tank with clean equipment. The tank was filled with walter filterd through a w/o system. This was left running for two weeks. Then i added some water from a trusted source to help with getting bacteria in the tank ready for stocking fish. After a further 10 days i added five neons and five real plants. Everything has been fine for a week then i woke this morning to find one neon dead and whith fungal like growths about 1cm in diameter in the gravel bed. Can anyone please tell me what this maybe? what may have caused it? and how i cen remedy this.

Did you cycle the tank? (add ammonia to 'feed' the bacteria and monitor the nitrate/nitrite levels) If not, search for cycling on here (or wait for one of the more experienced memebers to tell you what to do) but short term - i would do a big water change, buy a good water test kit (API Master) and let us know what the results are

sadly it sounds like you have not cycled your tank. Taking water from another tank will do very little to seed the required bacteria colony that is needed in your filter, and 'running' your tank for two weeks with nothing but water in it will not help at all.

Do you have a liquid testing kit with which you can check ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels? If so, check the water now. If not, I would suggest a larger water change (>50%) now as the most likely reason your fish have died is poor water quality.

Take a look in the beginners section and read the material about cycling. Then come back with any questions to this thread. Lots of people on here will be able to help you understand the next steps.

what size tank?

other tank mates?

tests for:

ammonia?

Nitrite?

Nitrate?

It sounds to me as if your tank isn`t cycled, I.E not enough bacteria if any in your filter to process the ammonia from your fish. I think this is what killed your neon not the fungal growth. The fungus will grow very quickly after death as it is in ideal conditions, food source, high temp ect.

you really need to test your water and probably do a large 70%+ water change.

Thanks for the help and advice i will be off to the shops for a testing kit and try again.
