hi ya i have just bought a second hand 8ft tank had a rear stroke ov luck! it used to be a marine tank, was wondering wot i should put it on, that is should i build a brick stand or steel or would it be ok on a prefered wooden unit, i am worried about weight i have a 4ft on a pine tv unit at the mo so i know how heavy they are, also should i re do the joints befor filling it up could the salt effect the silicone if so do i cut the old off? wots the best way? im moving oscers and arrowana from the 4ft to the 8ft they dont need it yet but oppotunity to good to pass up. :yahoo: :fish:

Welcome to the forum. :good:

By my reconing, that will literaly weigh a ton (1000kg) when filled. There are three main things to consider when you set-up a tank of this size, as regards to position. Will the floor take the weight? for most tanks the answer is a definate yes, but due to the size of this one, I'd strongly advise you speak to a structural engineer to cofirm that this is the case. Next, is the spot you hae planned level? This is important, as any lean will add strain to the tank, increasing the risk of a pane breaking when filled. Finaly, is it in direct sun-light, as algea in a tank of that size will prove a real head-ache.
Salt will not effect the proof-ness of silicone, so there will be no need to re-silicone. The only real manditory requirement for a stand, is that it is able to take the weight. Build material is not too important. Whatever you use, line the stand with ploestirien, to ensure that there are no high-spots on the surface, that may crack to bottom pane.

well the tank is being picked up tommrrow, He has made the choice of brick plinths in equal parts under the tank then he will clad it in pine! With cupboards in between plinths! On top is a length of ply then poly 30mm! Then 8ft pice of granite black!
I was wondering if you could have a big fire eel in with arrowana and osca's? i have seen a few people oferingthem to good home and how big do they get?????
