I have had cichlids for many many years, a 55gal and a beautiful 110 gal tank. The 110 gal broke in the night a few months back and of the fish I didn't lose ( I heard it break and rushed in immediately to sih out those i could) the others were given to friends. We recently were relocated from texas to California, so I sold my breeding pair of Niguaraganese to my local fish retailer. They took all my babies with each growing batch anyway. I am setting up new here the 55 gal tank. Its been cycling with a couple of danios for 1 week. I am trying to figure out a great looking Asian tropical fish stocking scheme. Any ideas? And NO I am not doing cichlids this time.

Have you considered a grand-scale "Hillstream Loach" multi-species setup, or a Hillstream Trout (smaller Barilius species like dogarsinghi @8cm would suit a 55g) setup, possibly even combining the two?

No, I just bought 6 platys to help cycle the tank......might even go with some blue rams with gold barbs

Nooooo the keywords are I got them to CYCLE the tank.....they are very hardy and a friend keeps platties, so she will get them after the tank is finished cycling. But thanks. I don't particularly like loaches.....was thinking gouramis and something else? I know these aren't Asian but have wrestled with the idea of congo tetras, they are gorgeous when in a large group.

For a great diversity of fish types that look or act in a quirky manor, an African riverine theme including Congo Tetras is a great way to go (see my sig and then add things like a Synodontis brichardi; a trio of Synodontis nevegriventis; a school of Pareutropius buffei; a couple of Atya gabonensis etc.)

I was also referring to the Rams and Gold Barbs when poking fun at the "Asian theme," but this is your tank... As long as you are happy all your planned fish like similar water temp; amount of current; boisterous tendancy tankmates etc. the fish world is your oyster
