Hey i just found this website and its brilliant i have my new tank coming in a few weeks of one of my Friends for about 40 pounds it is like 200L so its really cheap he isn't selling it with a filter or heater so i was going to get a fluval 204 or 304 seeing as it is around a 50 gal tank but i don't really know much about what goes in the media chambers can somebody give me some advice on what to do with this and also som advice on what to plant in the tank.

Having never owned an external filter I cant advise you about that.
Re plants
Have a look at
www.plantgeek.net
and that will give you an idea of the type of plants/difficulty of growing/place in the aquarium/light requirement etc

All my tanks have externals, the work great.
I've never owned a fluval, never seen one actually, but if your in the US Wisper and AquaTech work very well.
Actually, a more rule-abiding link would be here, in our very own plants and planted section

Unless your looking to buy plants ;)
I didn't see if your looking to buy plants, or just info on them

:hi:
I have fluval 204. It comes with some ceramic rings and carbon (and sponges). I put granular peat into mine as well because I wanted to try and lower my pH.
External filters are good because you can change the media around to suit yourself.

I am sorry Ginge if Ive tempted you into rule breaking,Unfortunately I have lived all my life and not realised that tropical plants and tropical fish were the same thing.
You can of course read Rose"s excellent article as suggested and then have a look through the 23 links she has provided to other sites
